Xander Blue Heats Up Subzero Showroom
[Skaneateles, NY] Subzero, maker of state-of-the-art refrigeration equipment, knows all about cool. So it's no surprise that the company's new Madison, WI, communication center lounge features dramatic ice-inspired glass panels created by Xander Blue.
Drake Design, the New York City firm selected to design the Subzero dining room and lounge, commissioned Xander Blue to make five custom panels, each four by ten feet, for the lounge area where Subzero entertains visiting clients and distributors.
The panels are constructed of large glass ingots suspended in a stainless steel frame. Each ingot, eight inch by twelve inch by one inch thick, is hand-poured, creating unique texture and transparency characteristics. "Much of our work involves dramatic kaleidoscopic color", says Andy Ramsgard, founder of Xander Blue, "but this project begged for the look of glistening ice cubes. So we chose a variety of clear ingots, with great backlighting. The result is beautiful, and a perfect match for the space."
Drake Design principal Jamie Drake, ASID, first encountered Xander Blue at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York City in May 2003. The Xander Blue booth featured several pieces from the furniture line, including a dining table and bar, as well as decorative glass panels. "It's a remarkable look, very dramatic yet inviting. I just loved it," Drake says.
"We're honored to be part of the Subzero showroom," says Ramsgard. "They've set the standard for form and function in their business. We strive to do the same in ours."
The ICFF show led to another high profile commission - five Xander Blue desks appear in the 2004 remake of The Stepford Wives. The Xander Blue furniture line was also named one of the top 10 new products by Glass Quarterly magazine for Winter 2003/04.
